About Active Series
The Active Series is a new and novel yoga series by Paramaguru Sharath Jois, first unveiled at the University of Virginia’s Center for Contemplative Sciences in November 2024. Drawing from his vast experience teaching and practicing Ashtanga Yoga over 34 years, and as the leading teacher in this field of yoga, Sharathji created the Active Series in order to bring the benefits of Ashtanga Yoga to everyone, regardless of their age or ability.
The Active Series can be practiced for 30 or 40 minutes daily. It’s ideal for those who want to adopt yoga into their daily life by practicing simple yoga postures and breathing in order to help maintain good health. It is designed to help everyone stay active and have a clear and calm mind. This series does not require one to be very flexible, so even those with limited flexibility can practice.
The Active Series is for people of any age, whether you have been active in the past or not. Too many people today—especially young people—are suffering from depression and other mental health issues. Including the Active Series in their daily schedule can help people keep their minds very fresh, relieve stress, and stay physically healthy, positive, and focused.
We hope the Active Series from Sharath Jois will encourage many people to take up a personal yoga practice.About Andrew Bresnen
Andrew started practicing Ashtanga Yoga while finishing his PhD in magnetic resonance studies at UTHSCSA. After graduating, Andrew turned his focus to his practice, traveling to India in 2014. During this first trip to India, Andrew met his teacher, Sharath Jois and became a dedicated student. While in India, Andrew became a science and math teacher for the Tibetan monks at Sera Jey Monastery. After a year and half practicing yoga with Sharath Jois and teaching science at the monastery, Andrew returned home to Austin, Tx and opened Mysore Austin where he still teaches Ashtanga Yoga. Over the past 12 years Andrew has returned to Mysore, India to practice with his teacher, spending more than 24 months cumulatively in the Sharath Yoga Center shala under the watchful eye of his teacher and Andrew continues his early morning practices daily at home.In 2024, Andrew attended the first offering of the Active Series in Virginia. During this training Andrew’s teacher passed away unexpectedly. Sharath Jois’ daughter, Shraddha, who was integral in designing the Active Series, decided to continue her father’s legacy and finished teaching course for her father a year later in Mysore, India. Andrew completed this training under both Sharath and Shraddha Jois and is very happy to be able to continue offering this new branch of ashtanga yoga to any interested students.
